A block of aged Calabrian burl waits forty years before it becomes a pipe. Some of that patience must belong to the maker.
The last hour of a pipe is the quietest. The tenon slides in, the shoulders meet, and something long in the making finally lets go.
I begin every piece the same way: sit with the block, turn it, wait. When the shape appears, it appears whole.
